Madison Square Garden: Msg Network
built 199 days ago
Checketts oversees the operations of the Hartford Civic Center, MSG Network, and Fox Sports New York, which are under the Madison Square Garden (MSG) umbrella, and his organization recently acquired Radio City Music Hall. MSG projects ... include the Radio City Christmas Spectacular and an original production of A Christmas Carol. And then there is the Big East basketball tournament, assorted concerts, championship boxing matches, indoor tennis tournaments, and dog, horse, and cat shows. All totaled, MSG is host to more than 500 events in a single year.

Boxing was Madison Square Garden III's principal claim to fame. The building exterior in contrast to the ornate towers of the first two Garden was a simple box. Its most distinctive feature was its ornate marquee that was above the main entrance, with its seemingly endless abbreviations (Tomw., V/S, Rgrs, Tonite, Thru, etc.) Even the name was abbreviated: Madison Sq. Garden. On January 17, 1941, 23,190 people witnessed Fritzie Zivic successful welterweight defense against Henry Armstrong. That is the biggest attendance record of any of the Gardens. MSG III was featured prominently in the 2005 Ron Howard film Cinderella Man (although exterior montage shots glorified it by placing it against the Times Square signs on Broadway when it was in fact one block west).

The reverence attached to Madison Square Garden goes beyond its three decades at 33rd Street and Seventh Avenue, an honor conferred as much by the Garden's proud lineage as by the many memorable moments this structure has seen. The current Madison Square Garden is the fourth building so named. The first once housed P.T. Barnum's Hippodrome. The second, built in 1890, was designed by Stanford White, who was later murdered in its roog gardens. In the late '40s and early '50s, college basketball was the real attraction at the third MSG, while pro ball was just an afterthought.

Manhattan borough president, Scott Stringer thinks relocating Madison Square Garden is right on time. New Yorkers need a new Penn Station and building the Moynihan Station would help to alleviate the traffic of everyday commuters. If MSG is not allowed to move, its owners will resort to onsite renovations, leaving the underground Penn Station doomed to its current overcrowded state.
