Madison Square Garden: Arenas
built 190 days ago
Simply known to many as “The Garden,” Madison Square Garden might be the most famous arena in the world. Everyone whoĆ¢€™s anyone has played at The Garden - Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Luciano Pavarotti, Michael Jackson and Bruce Springsteen just to name a few.

Self-proclaimed "The World's Most Famous Arena," the titanic Madison Square Garden has housed the cream of the crop in sports, music, and entertainment since 1879. Home to both the NY Knicks and Rangers and hosting over 300 performances a year, this is where legends are born.

As an iconic figure, Madison Square Garden has made various appearances in film and television programs. It was featured in the 1979 Robert Redford film The Electric Horseman. Madison Square Garden is featured in the opening scenes of Highlander (1986), which included footage of former tag team The Fabulous Freebirds. (It is worth noting... that only the exterior was used; the interior shots were from Continental Airlines Arena.) The Garden's marquee is seen in the 1984 comedy film, Top Secret! advertising a concert by the protagonist, Nick Rivers. In 1988 it featured scenes in the cult comedy hit Coming to America.

Madison Square Garden bills itself as the world’s greatest arena. I’m sure that assertion could start a good argument. There’s no denying that MSG is a top shelf venue. Bands know they’ve made it to the big time when they sell out at The Garden. For bands like The Police selling out MSG is easy.

Aside from attending an event at Madison Square Garden, visitors can tour the complex with the "All Access Tour," a "behind-the-scenes" look at the locker rooms, the theater, and the arena floor. Tours are offered every day between 11am and 3pm, on the half-hours. The cost is $17 per adult and $12 per child.

Neither square-shaped nor on Madison Avenue and without a single patch of green within its cylindrical walls, this iconic behemoth takes its name from its original 1879 Vanderbilt-built building and location. Architectural buffs still sniff at the current structure erected in 1968, which is actually the venue’s fourth incarnation, and stands on the site of Charles McKim’s much-mourned 1910 Penn Station. But even its critics concede that it has consistently been the stage for some of the world’s biggest events, from Democratic and Republican political conventions to the famous Frazier-Ali bouts to the post-9/11 Concert for NYC. In addition to being the home of the Knicks, Rangers, and Liberty, MSG holds 300 events a year in the 20,000 capacity arena, the more intimate 5600-seat Theater at Madison Square Garden and the 36,000 square foot Expo Center.
