After a very successful stint as a Web browser-only application, Macromedia Flash is now going to break free of the confines of running within another application. Using its FlashForward event as a launching block, Macromedia announced plans for a new version of Flash–and accompanying services called Macromedia Central–that sees Flash become a stand-alone application in its own right.

Alongside the Developer Release of Macromedia Central announced Wednesday, Macromedia ... announced the availability of a software development kit (SDK) for Central. The SDK includes user-interface components, a debug panel, Flash authoring templates, source code for sample applications, libraries of application graphics and icons, documentation for APIs, and APIs and other development tools for AOL's IM platform, the company said.

The Central environment runs on both desktops and mobile devices using the technology of the Macromedia Flash Player 6.
