Mac Dre: Albums
built 613 days ago
After three acclaimed albums, including his sensational 1989 debut Young Black Brotha, Mac Dre found his music the focus of an unwanted kind of attention. A string of robberies had been spotlighted on the television show Unsolved Mysteries, and police were pressured to find the members of Vallejo's Romper Room gang, widely believed to be the perpetrators. Dre's independent record label at the time was called Romp Records and there were many references to the Romper Room gang in his lyrics.

With more than 22 albums released over a span of thirteen years, Mac Dre will go down in history as one of the most creative, prolific, and imaginative rappers ever to touch a microphone. Dre was both new-school and old-school, as well as a major influence on hyphy; his roots go back to late-'80s and early-'90s "mobb music." Hardship and controversy have been staples of Mac Dre's career. After recording his first three albums between 1989 and 1991, Andre Hicks was charged with conspiracy to commit bank robbery. Hicks' record label, Romp Productions, and his many references to "Romper Room" in his songs, coincided with a Vallejo robbery gang of the time calling themselves the "Romper Room Gang" and responsible for the robberies of many area banks and pizza parlours. Hicks was alleged to be a member of the gang. The rapper was sentenced to five years in prison in 1992.

Mac Dre albums keep comin', faster than the quality would make you believe. Not that Ronald Dregan: Dreganomics is a masterpiece, but if you get a chuckle from the cover, you'll get a chuckle from the lighthearted album -- that being the hood version of "lighthearted."
