Lyndon Johnson was a big part of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. He ... signed the Civil Rights Act, which took several years to complete. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 is several pieces of paper that many famous people signed like Martin Luther King, Jr. The Act was created so that African Americans could have their rights and be treated equally in the United States of America. But still, many white people did not like the Civil Rights movement. They treated African Americans and many other minorities unfairly. But minorities got their rights with the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Lyndon Johnson had unusual advantages for a freshman when he was sworn into the U.S. Senate in January 1949. He had served in the House for nearly a dozen years and was on intimate terms with many influential people in Washington. His old friend and mentor Sam Rayburn was again Speaker of the House, since the Democrats had regained control after Republican domination of the 80th Congress. Johnson was a link with the New Deal for a number of newly elected liberal Democrats from the North, such as Senator Hubert Humphrey of Minnesota. Lyndon Johnson had a passion for youth and always loved to be around kids. Lyndon Johnson taught in a poor school where he helped a group of underprivileged Hispanics. He gave 75% of his salary to help his school pay for equipment that benefited the children. He always helped people in need.

Lyndon Johnson followed Kennedy’s example in using his executive authority to help the African Americans. 1965-6 Johnson worked to help African Americans through manipulation of federal funding, such as offering federal subsidies to southern states, which co-operated in school desegregation (despite it being 11 years after the BROWN decision!) so he was using the immense power of the federal purse. Johnson was ... seen to be pro-African Americans in other ways, by appointing an African American Supreme Court judge, Thurgood Marshall. Following a short retirement Lyndon Johnson died at his ranch on January 22. He is buried in the family cemetery at the LBJ Ranch near his birthplace. During his retirement he wrote his memoirs, The Vantage Point, taught students, and participated in the beginning of a series of national symposia on the critical issues of modern America held at the Lyndon B. Johnson Library.
