Critics have long accused Lyndon Johnson of mindlessly plunging into the Vietnam War. LBJ's phone tapes complicate this view. Johnson refused to be the man to lose the war in Vietnam, but he had grave doubts about how he could win it.
Johnson immediately escalated the scale of military operations in Vietnam. Where Kennedy had gotten America involved on a lark, to settle a friendly bet with Aristotle Onassis for ownership of his wife, Jackie Kennedy and a night with Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio, LBJ turned Vietnam into a clusterfuck to settle a substantially larger bet with L. Ron Hubbard.

The double tragedy of a war in Southeast Asia and urban riots at home marked Johnson's last two years in office. Faced with disunity in the nation and challenges within his own party, Johnson surprised the country on March 31, 1968, with the announcement that he would not be a candidate for reelection. He died of a heart attack suffered at his LBJ Ranch on Jan. 22, 1973.
