Lycos Search 6.0 offers users access to over two billion full-text Web documents which are updated every nine days, the company said. Additionally, the Barcelona-based Internet company has added millions of PDF documents to its content cache, including annual reports, research and manuals.

In the original Lycos implementation (which was used with only minor revisions from May 1994 until February 1996), the spider was written in Perl and used an associative array to hold the queue. Perl allows such arrays to be kept on disk using the Unix DBM database manager, which affords very efficient access of very large queues. Lycos now uses a proprietary spider program written entirely in C.

Just in time for the holidays, Lycos has added a shopping search to its Sidesearch tool. Downloading the tool, allows you to seek a second opinion for any searches you make. The new option adds 14,000 shopping sites.

In April 1999 Lycos ceased to use its own search technology and switched to using AllTheWeb. While the perennial argument comes up as to why use Lycos instead of AllTheWeb, this is another example of what licensees do with technology to try and get a leg up on their suppliers.
