LYCOS RETRIEVER
Lycos Search: Lycos Search Engine
built 634 days ago
SearchEngineWatch offers this review of a new Lycos feature called Sidesearch, which allows users to see results from a Lycos search off to the side. What makes it unique? It runs whenever you do a search in a major search engine. Meaning that when you do a search on Google, it will show Lycos results for comparison. Great idea, if they can get people to install it.

Of all the search engines, Lycos is one with the most “flashy,” commecial feel. Some like it, some hate it. In any case, the style seems to appeal to those who like the old “information service” feel (of which AOL is a remnant). That is, Lycos wants to give you the impression that you can find anything you ever wanted to read, look at or buy, just through navigating its internal links. Lycos has agreements with a wide variety of companies who are able to advertise on the front page, or in some cases, actually become embedded in Lycos itself. The search box appears almost as an afterthought in the midst of everything else.

Side Search is a homegrown Lycos product based on internal Lycos studies, indicating the average Web user routinely visits 2.5 search engines per month. Knowing there are significant differences in search engine results, Lycos developed Side Search as a way to seamlessly deliver those results to the user and to enhance their overall search experience on Lycos. Lycos has now extended the product's functionality with a new shopping focus.

Terra Lycos (http://www.terralycos.com) has announced the launch of its new Lycos Search 6.0 service (http://search.lycos.com), which offers new features that are designed to enhance the relevancy of search results and provide additional functionality. Users now have access to over 2 billion full-text Web documents powered by Fast Search & Transfer (FAST), Terra Lycos' search technology partner. With the FAST engine, the service provides a full refresh every 9 days, which is claimed to be twice as fresh as the nearest competitor.

Currently, the Lycos search network is fragmented with the "international version" of Lycos (the .com address) displaying results culled from the Ask Jeeves database. Regional versions of Lycos tend to draw results from the Google database. Both search engines databases are available through HotBot , (another of the original search tools but now owned by Lycos).

Terra Lycos, the #4 portal, is launching a paid inclusion program for its search engine (powered by FAST Search). The new program is called Lycos InSite Select. Google is now the only remaining major spider engine without a paid inclusion option.
