With the two data lines out of service, the entire Lycos Network including Lycos Mail and the Tripod Web hosting service was knocked off the Internet, O'Reilly said. None of the data being stored by Lycos was affected by the incident, she added.

Lycos Mail is free but contains ads, and its accounts are deleted if they aren’t checked at least once every 30 days. For US$5.95 per year, members can upgrade the account so that it’s preserved even if it isn’t checked once a month. Another upgrade option exists for $19.95 per year, which removes graphical ads and increases the storage to 5GB. All versions of Lycos Mail offer virus scanning, but none offers virus cleaning.

Lycos Mail offers 3 gigabytes of free storage which is no big deal. But the bonus here is they allow unlimited sized file attachments unlike Hotmail, Yahoo or Gmail which limit attachments to 10MB or 20 MB.

Lycos has been migrating its Lycos Mail members to the new system, which it is adopting from its South Korean parent company, Daum Communications. Changes to the user interface will be minor, so the migration should be fairly transparent to users, he said. A user-interface upgrade with Ajax functionality is planned for later, he said.

In order to receive Required Communications, you must provide Lycos, upon registration with the Lycos Network, a valid e-mail address to which Lycos may send electronic mail. Your computer must ... have a modem or other means of Internet access, an Internet browser such as Internet Explorer 6.x , Firefox 2.x, or Netscape 8.x or above, e-mail communications software capable of receiving and storing electronic mail, and a printer, if you wish, for printing electronic communications. Lycos will provide notice of any changes to these requirements.

Whether Lycos can offer search and spam filtering as good as Gmail’s remains to be seen. It ... stands at a disadvantage via Gmail’s integration with the rest of Google’s offerings. Gmail’s tabbed conversations and ability to view a wide variety of file types as HTML are also features Lycos mail lacks. Links clicked in emails at Lycos can be viewed inline, without leaving your email interface - that’s nice. One way or the other, the email wars continue. Thanks to Gary Price for pointing this out.
