Lutheranism: Teachings
built 657 days ago
The path from Luther to Lutheranism, so far as worship is concerned, showed a departure from Luther’s own intentions and a development which in fact implies a peculiar novelty. But this development is so well concealed behind preserved liturgical forms that it has been surprisingly little observed not only in general knowledge but ... in the scholarly expositions of the history of Lutheran worship.
Fortress Introduction to Lutheranism A helpful and accessible guide to Lutheranism's history and central tenents, with numerous photos and illustrations. Small wonder that many are confused about Lutheranism's historical origins, doctrinal affirmation, and ethical directives. Even Lutherans themselves -- maintains, Eric Gritsch, a leading authority on the Lutheran tradition -- are not clear about their identity. Some Lutheran consider themselves heirs to a reform movement, others see themselves as members of a denomination or ecclesial institution, and still others are confounded by the tension and miss the tradition's thrust.
Sadly, Lutheranism (... known as Lutheranity, Luthernia, Lutha, Big Luth, and many other ridiculously stupid names) only appeals to a few million people, because smart and good looking people hate fat people. And now you know the rest of the story(See also Saint Cyril and Methodious Class of 2000 yearbook).
Lutheranism has always been concerned with the cultural and intellectual aspects of the Christian faith. Its influence on music through such composers as J. S. Bach, Dietrich Buxtehude, Michael Praetorius, and Heinrich Schütz has been as profound as it was on philosophy. Thinkers of Lutheran background, such as Immanuel Kant, J. G. Fichte, G. W. F. Hegel, and Søren Kierkegaard, articulated their ideas in dialogue with and in opposition to the Lutheran tradition. Lutheranism has ... produced many notable biblical scholars, such as D. F. Strauss and Albert Schweitzer, and theologians, such as Albrecht Ritschl, Adolf von Harnack, Rudolf Otto, Rudolf Bultmann, and Paul Tillich.G.W.F., GEORGE WOLFGANG FORELL, Th.M., Ph.D., LL.D., D.D.

The problem with such a comparison is that there is no monolithic Lutheranism with single teachings on each issue. Lutheranism is a broad spectrum of denominations with a wide range of beliefs. Besides, no comparison with any value can truly be objective -- each author will have strong feelings one way or another.
