Lutheranism is the principal form of Protestantism in Germany, and is the national faith of Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Iceland. The organization may be episcopal (Germany, Sweden) or synodal (the Netherlands and USA): the Lutheran World Federation has its headquarters in Geneva. In the USA, Lutheranism is particularly strong in the Midwest, where several churches were originally founded by German and Scandinavian immigrants.

It is obvious that the splitting of Lutheranism into national churches and Landeskirchen has brought about a noticeably motley variety. This fact is connected with political and historical conditions and cannot be said to be founded on a principle or to be constitutive in Lutheranism, even if it goes very deep.

This so-called "silence" of the Lutheran Confessions has led some to conclude that, for confessional Lutheranism at least, the question of Scripture in the Church is open-ended. Not only is there no list of those books of the Old and New Testaments that are considered canonical or official, but ... the method by which one determines how Scripture is the "rule and norm" remains unsettled.
