Born in New York City on May 4, 1903, "Luther Adler" was the product of a well-known Yiddish theatre family. His stage debut came at the age of five when he appeared in Schmendrick. Although primarily a stage actor, Adler's film credits contain character portrayals that are both potent and noteworthy, as evidenced in the 1951 film "The Magic Face", where he plays an impersonator who murders Hitler and then takes his place. Here Adler shines in what would otherwise be an average picture. His first movie role came in 1937 with "Lancer Spy" and continued over the next four decades, with credits in some two dozen films. His sister Stella is well-known as an acting teacher, and his brother Jay starred in occasional films until his death in 1978.

Bereits im Alter von fünf Jahren trat Luther Adler 1908 im Theater seines Vaters an der New Yorker Lower East Side auf, in einem Theaterstück mit dem Namen Schmendrick. Mit 13 Jahren folgten 1916 erste größere Rollen, und am 5. Dezember 1921 wurde der 18-jährige Adler in The Hand of the Potter, einem Theaterstück von Theodore Drieser erstmals am Broadway verpflichtet. Adlers Durchbruch als Theaterschauspieler folgte am 27. Februar 1923, als er die Hauptrolle des Stücks Humoresque übernahm.

Luther Adler was born into a Yiddish theatrical dynasty. One of the six children born to Jacob P. and Sara Adler, he made his debut in the world in New York City on May 4, 1903, originally billed as Lutha J. Adler. His full siblings Charles, Jay, Julia, and Stella (the famous acting teacher) as well as his half-siblings Celia and Abram Adler all appeared on Broadway, and his father Jacob, the biggest star of the Yiddish-language theater, was considered one of the great American actors.
