When brothers Owen and Luke Wilson left their Dallas childhood home for the University of Texas, they had no idea they were on the way to thriving careers in Hollywood. After acquiring the writing bug while attending a playwriting class, Owen met fellow student Wes Anderson and the two wrote and produced the short film Bottle Rocket (1994). Owen took the lead role and recruited younger brother Luke to costar. The film generated an underground buzz, winning a well-received showing at the Sundance Festival and attracting the attention of producer James L. Brooks, who subsequently produced a feature version of it, released in 1996. Though it failed to make money it developed a strong cult following, largely due to the Wilson brothers' onscreen charm and acting abilities. Wilson went on to appear in Scream 2 (1997), Home Fries (1998), and in Owen's second feature as a screenwriter, Rushmore (1998).

Versatile actor Luke Wilson was born today in 1971. In addition to working often with brothers Owen and Andrew, Luke has made three movies with director Wes Anderson, including the men’s critically acclaimed debut Bottle Rocket in 1996. Together the four have a knack for bringing out childlike whimsy in kooky and flawed characters. Despite mainstream success in high profile movies like Charlie’s Angels and Blue Streak, Wilson has shown he’s more than willing to return to his indie roots. In 2001 he re-teamed with Anderson to play a former child tennis star in the dark comedy The Royal Tenenbaums. Previously Owen Wilson had been the brother behind the scenes for their collaborative efforts, writing Bottle Rocket and Tenenbaums.
