After winning the individual NCAA title in 1999 - beating the scoring record previously set by Tiger Woods - he turned professional in 2001. Three years later, he won the European Masters and the Scandinavian Masters, and he was a member of the victorious European Ryder Cup team.

Luke Donald went into the clubhouse at 7-under with a one-shot lead over K.J. Choi after the first round of the Sony Open. Will MacKenzie and Jim Furyk were tied for third. Michelle Wie, in her latest outing against male players, shot an 8-over 78 and was sitting at second-to-last as the second round begins.
