Conceived by agency Brandmission, Lufthansa introduces the new Airbus A380 to the public with an exhibition touring through the main german airports Frankfurt, Hannover, Düsseldorf, München, Leipzig, Berlin and Stuttgart. This quite large roadshow addresses everybody from child to the elderly, from business people to families.

The trial, called Trusted Traveler, will last for 14 days, but if all goes well, Lufthansa plans to roll out the system in 2006 for frequent fliers on a voluntary basis. The idea is to make airport handling processes faster, more secure and more efficient. Biometric procedures in air traffic control could be made mandatory by EU directive in the future.

East Germany attempted to establish its own airline in the 1950s using the Lufthansa name, but this resulted in a dispute with West Germany, where the airline was already operating. East Germany renamed its national airline to Interflug, which ceased operations in 1991. Lufthansa was banned from flying into West Berlin until the demise of the communist regime.

Although Lufthansa and British Airways both participated in the high-speed Connexion trials in 2003, the latter has not yet signed up with Boeing. Other carriers have, including SAS, JAL, SIA, CIA, and KAL and one wonders how much, if any, the availability of Internet connections at 33,000 feet will influence the choice of carrier in a couple of years. As of today Lufthansa has five planes equipped and will have all its long-haul fleet equipped by 2006.

Just like its counterparts British Airways PLC (BAB: Research, Estimates) and Switzerland's SAirGroup, Lufthansa felt the pinch from higher fuel prices. Brent crude oil earlier this week traded at $30.81 a barrel, more than 26 percent higher than its level six months earlier.
