Lucy Liu Discovering an interest in acting, Lucy Liu, who once supported herself as an aerobics instructor, began pursuing a professional acting career after landing a starring role in Andre Gregory's adaptation of "Alice in Wonderland" in 1989. Upon graduation from college, she headed to Los Angeles. In 1991, Liu, who worked as a waitress during hard times in L.A, eventually made her professional acting debut as a waitress (guest spot) at the Peach Pit in the popular series Beverly Hills, 90210.
This week, Lucy Liu hits Tribeca with two films: a vampire flick called Rise and the oddball romance Watching the Detectives. In Detectives, directed by Broken Lizard comic Paul Soter, Liu plays a nutjob sweetheart who both seduces and tortures a lonely video-store clerk (Cillian Murphy) by playing out outrageous pranks that begin to turn his boring life into something more comically cinematic. Liu talked to Logan Hill about why her comedy’s a little like S&M — and why she won’t be surprised if she sees her vampire movie screening at Show World.

In less than a year, Liu landed her first professional acting job with a stint as a Peach Pit waitress on "Beverly Hills, 90210" (Fox, 1990-2000). Soon, she was enjoying several guest spots a year on both dramas and comedies – ranging from “The X-Files” (Fox, 1993-2002) to “Coach” (ABC, 1989-1997). One of her more memorable turns was a recurring part playing a woman whose young son was suffering from complications of AIDS on NBC's medical drama, "ER" (NBC, 1994— ).
Her earliest acting job found Liu in a small role on the teen drama Beverly Hills, 90210 during the 1991-92 season, playing a waitress at the gang’s favorite hang-out, the Peach Pit. Over the next several years, Liu made appearances on such popular television shows as Coach, The X-Files, and ER, and earned a spot in the cast of the short-lived sitcom Pearl (1996-97), starring Rhea Perlman. She made her mainstream movie debut as one of many former girlfriends of Tom Cruise’s character in Jerry Maguire (1996), but landed more substantial roles in such little-seen independent features as Guy (1996), Gridlock’d (1997), and City of Industry (1997), starring Harvey Keitel.
