Born to Chinese immigrants and raised in an Italian neighborhood in Queens, Lucy Liu's interest in acting started after landing the lead role in her high school play Alice in Wonderland. She moved to Los Angeles to go pro, and her lucky break came in 1997 when she got a small part in Ally McBeal, playing razor-tongued Ling; she stole the show, and her role was expanded. Since then, the actress who staunchly insists she doesn't want to only play stereotypically Asian roles has rocketed to stardom as a member of the Charlie's Angels crime-fighting trio, the dominatrix in Payback and the butt-kicking O-Ren Ishii in Kill Bill: Vol. 1.

Best known to television audiences as Ling Woo, the raging force of political incorrectness on Ally McBeal, Lucy Alexis Liu has managed to cross over to the big screen in such features as Payback and Play It to the Bone. Born to Chinese parents in Jackson Heights, NY, on December 2, 1968, Liu grew up speaking both English and Mandarin. With the exception of a small role as an inmate in the Oscar-winning film Chicago, 2002 brought little recognition for Liu -- Cypher, Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever, and Party Monster with former Home Alone star Macaulay Culkin went virtually unseen by the general public. 2003's Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle placed Liu firmly back inside the spotlight, though she was somewhat overshadowed by the toothy blonde glint that is Cameron Diaz. She was cast as a dominatrix in the Mel Gibson action flick Payback (1999) before appearing in Clint Eastwood's True Crime (1999). Moving to a more prominent role, Liu was cast as a backpacker in the sport comedy Play It to the Bone (1999, starring Woody Harrelson and Antonio Banderas).
