Lucy Lawless: Characters
built 613 days ago
In a Judge Judy parody Lucy played a performing clown who was stiffed by a mother who didn't think Lucy's bump-and-grind routine was appropriate at her child's birthday party. A suprise ending had the REAL Judge Judy arrive to render a verdict in favor of Lucy's character.

"There might have been more general discussion about whether the characters were lesbian or not out in the mainstream," Lawless said. "In the 1990s, when this was all new, people like Ellen [DeGeneres] and k.d. lang and all these people who are out were blazing a trail. And you might hope that it'd be done long ago. But in a lot of the world, it's still incredibly painful to come out, even today."
Lawless sees the role of Xena as her first major breakthrough as an actress. She describes the character as "a woman as strong as any man or woman has ever been, who lives by her wits, but is ... a fighter. She's a very human hero, who knows all about the darker side of human nature since she must battle it within herself every day."

An example of the popularity of Xena: Warrior Princess is that Lawless is a universally recognized celebrity despite the fact that she has not had a major role outside of the television series. She was even portrayed as a character on The Simpsons (playing a super-powered, flying version of herself).

The opening monologue had Lucy fielding questions from the "audience" about the sexuality of her Xena character. The questioners included a nervous geek, an oversexed male, and a couple of lesbians.
