Lucent Technologies Inc. is the corporate descendant of AT & T's Western Electric manufacturing division, which AT & T bought in 1881. For most of the 20th century it was Western Electric that made telephones in nothing but black. Over the years it manufactured other products, including network boxes for telecommunications carriers, PBXs (private branch exchanges) for offices, and semiconductors. Headquartered in Murray Hill, New Jersey, and formed in 1925, Bell Laboratories has a long history of innovations, from synchronizing sound and film in the 1920s to inventing the transistor in the 1940s and the laser in the 1950s. In 1999 Lucent introduced 128 products that originated in Bell Labs, and researchers there claimed more than 1,000 patents during the year--their highest number of patents ever.

Lucent Technologies (now Avaya Communications) is a major provider of telecommunications equipment to the telecommunications industry. Their plant in Omaha, Nebraska contains nearly two million square feet of manufacturing facility, including inventory. To manage the plant, at the start of each shift, the workers were given a sheet of paper with what each of their machines was expected to run during that shift. Changes could not easily be made, except at a shift change. There was limited information regarding what had been done and what was currently running at the plant at any given moment. Tracking inventory was problematic.

A display of technology at its most impressive, Lucent's newest research and design centers in the neighboring techno-communities of Naperville and Lisle, Illinois (west of Chicago) comprise six buildings housing 20 telecommunications closets. Each of the two campuses has more than 650,000 square feet of space and contains nearly 5,000 workstations. With such a massive undertaking, harnessing all the technology (and all of the cable management) proved daunting. Installation of the network while all the other massive construction was underway was not a preferred option.
