Luc Besson: Visual France
built 619 days ago
Called "the French Steven Spielberg" by some, Luc Besson made an impressive debut at age 24 with "Le Dernier Combat" (1983), an apocalyptic drama noted for its striking black-and-white photography and bold lack of dialogue (a clever low-budget strategy). His subsequent films were box-office hits at home, more popular for their exhilarating visuals than for their thin storylines. After going underground to helm "Subway" (1985), starring Christopher Lambert and Isabelle Adjani, this son of scuba divers mined his first love (the sea) to make the underwater epic "The Big Blue" (1988), a huge commercial success in France and his international breakthrough, excluding the US market....

Luc Besson will stay in China for nine days, mostly in Shanghai. On June 21, he will head to Beijing to attend a film screening event named "Visual France". He will ... present the premiere of the film "Angel A" at the China Film Archive.
Besson's parents were divers, and with young Luc in tow, they toured the Mediterranean coastline for much of his childhood. Throughout his life Besson has never quite belonged. He was born in Paris, to parents who led a nomadic life as Club Med scuba instructors in Italy, Greece and Yugoslavia. A natural swimmer, diver and student of sea life, he was ... a solitary child. When he was 10, his parents moved back to France, divorced and married others. "Here there is two families, and I am the only bad souvenir of something that doesn't work," he said. "And if I disappear, then everything is perfect.

Besson's major movies have all been box-office triumphs. In France that has not endeared him to anyone much - one exception being the organisers of the Paris Olympics bid. It was Besson whom they drafted in to capture the image and spirit of the French capital in the official video film meant to win the hearts of International Olympic Committee members at last week's final bid presentations in Singapore.
