Luc Besson: Films
built 620 days ago
Luc Besson might look like he's on his last legs, but that's only because he's wobbling around on crutches since the last time ComingSoon.net talked to him about his animated feature Arthur and the Invisibles. This time, he's joined by a rather stunning companion, one Rie Rasmussen, the Danish artist/model/filmmaker who stars in his new black-and-white French action-romance. Angel-A is about a loser (Amélie's Jamel Debbouze) who's at his wit's end until the beautiful Angela (played by Rie) literally falls into his life, purporting to be a guardian angel who wants to help him turn his luck around.

In 1985 Besson followed up his auspicious debut with Subway (1985). A strange hybrid of a film, Subway saw Besson branch out from the fantasy element of 'Combat' and begin investigating the noir influences of his French predecessors. The film follows Fred (Christopher Lambert), a petty criminal who flees into the dark Parisian underground after stealing documents from a local mob boss. Here in the depths of the sewer Fred encounters a series of characters that, in true Besson style, have little to say but plenty to show.

SUBWAY is an early and significant entry in Luc Besson's portfolio, and that of several of its actors, most notably Jean Reno and Isabelle Adjani (who has earned 11 Best Actress awards to date). The film has one of the best openings ever -- sharp, frenetic, and a foreshadowing of RONIN's wondrous car chases. From there the story gets...strange, but that's expected of any sudden entry into a vastly differing society. Helena (Adjani), hair spiked stiff, tells off her gangster-husband and their so-polite dinner companions in one priceless scene, then flees in favor of the more companionable denizens found in the subway. SUBWAY leaves you scratching your head, wondering what's the point, where's the point, and knowing it's just there if you could only see it, lurking at the peripheral vision. Not a bad thing and, sure, not for everyone, but the trip into the Paris Metro is interesting and fun, nonetheless.

[L]ately, Besson has left those devotees high and dry. It’s been eight years since the release of his last live-action feature, The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc. In that time, he has directed a poorly received animated film, Arthur and the Invisibles, and produced plenty of kinetic guilty pleasures, including the two Transporter films and the Parkour showcase District B13. What all those endeavors can’t disguise is that it’s been a lengthy wait for his latest visionary trifle, leaving his ardent followers chomping at the bit with impatience.
