Lowriders: Cars
built 634 days ago
Lowriders are mostly classic cars from the 1950’s which already rode low. A large number of cars from the 1940’s and 1960’s are ... modified into lowriders. The owner of such a vehicle is also referred to as a lowrider.
1964 Chevrolet Impala The 1964 Chevy Impala hardtop or convertible is one of the most popular lowriders, and to a lesser extent other 1958-1964 Impalas. Daytons is one of the most popular manufacturers of spoke rims, such as their 13-inch or 14-inch 100 spoke rims (Although many people prefer the "old school" look of the 72 spoke Daytons). Although the 1961-64 Chevrolet Impala is usually sought after by car collectors, vehicles including the 1978-88 GM G-bodies (which includes the Chevrolet Monte Carlo, Buick Regal, Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, and Pontiac Grand Prix) and their 1973-77 relatives are usually seen as entry-level lowriders. Although heavy customization of the cars is popular in the lowrider scene, some lowriders pass for restored stock cars, especially those based on 1930s-1960s American cars. In some countries, other cars like the Volvo PV544, Morris Minor, air-cooled VW Beetle, Ford Zodiac, Vauxhall Victor and Vauxhall Cresta (or other car with Trans-Atlantic styling) are often used as substitutes for American cars. This is generally due to the lack of American car imports, costs or even a desire to build a unique lowrider out of a domestically produced vehicle.
"Cops associate lowriders with gangbangers. The reality is they have nothing to do with it," said Berrios, who one day hopes to become a member of The Dukes car club. "Lowriders are hard-working people who happen to like old cars." Berrios thinks back to one evening while out watching the cars on Mission cruise up and down the block. Paddy wagons line the street like ice cream trucks on a hot summer day, waiting for the lowriders to get out of hand.
"I am a gadget freak and my Sidekick II rolls everywhere with me," said Mister Cartoon, who is world renowned for his art on everything urban, from lowriders, album covers and custom shoes to his specialty, tattoos. "I was happy to partner with T-Mobile to customize a Sidekick II to reflect my style and give young art collectors the opportunity to carry a piece of my work around with them."

What she has found out so far is that those who work on lowriders have a deep passion for the work. They love to talk about everything from the paint selection to the hydraulics that make the car hop down the street.
