The present-day Louvre has been the result of a series of successive building projects completed over the past 800 years.[5] The origin of the term Louvre is murky. First, Potter contends that King Philip II of France referred to the structure as L'Œuvre (French language: The Masterpiece) because it was the largest building in 13th century Paris. Second, Sauval proposes that the name references an old Anglo-Saxon term leouar meaning "castle" or "fortress".[3] Additionally, Edwards posits that the name stems from the word rouvre meaning oak, referring to the building's location in a forest.[6]

The Louvre Abu Dhabi is about to become one of the world's premier art galleries. The new gallery has brokered a deal with the Louvre in Paris (French Museums Agency and the Ministry of Culture and Communications) to adopt the name, lend works of art and stage special exhibitions.

The Louvre has approximately 6000 European paintings and and was originally designed as a palace. It has been influenced by major events in French history and has had many architects and decorators make changes and additions to the original structure. When the Orsay Museum was created in 1986, most of the post mid 19th century works left the Louvre and were transferred to the new museuem which is close by.

Universally famous ancient works of art in the Louvre include a statuette of the Sumerian ruler Gudea, a stele bearing Hammurabi's code, an Egyptian painted stone statue of a scribe sitting cross-legged, the Venus de Milo, and the Victory of Samothrace. Among outstanding later works are two marble Slaves by Michelangelo, the treasure of the abbey of St. Denis, and the French crown diamonds. Important paintings include the Pietà of Avignon, Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa, Veronese's immense Wedding at Cana (which was badly damaged in 1992 while being installed in the newly renovated galleries), and Watteau's Embarkation for Cythera.
