The Musée du Louvre holds 35,000 art works in eight departments, displayed in more than 60,000 square meters of exhibition floors dedicated to the permanent collections, spread through three main building sections, Richelieu, Sully and Denon. Besides art, the Louvre displays a host of other exhibits, including archaeology, sculptures and objets d'art. The permanent galleries showcase large holdings of furniture; the most spectacular item was the Bureau du Roi, completed by Jean Henri Riesener in the 18th century, now returned to the Palace of Versailles.

Fifty years after Georges Braque, another contemporary artist has been commissioned to create a work for permanent display at the Louvre. Anselm Kiefer installs a monumental painting on the theme of constellations and self-portrait in the 19th century staircase designed by the architects Percier and Fontaine, situated at the north end of Perrault’s Colonnade. This ambitious creation has been unveiled on October 25, 2007.
