Louis Pasteur was born in Dole, France, on December 27, 1822. He was the only son of Jean Pasteur, a poorly educated leather tanner. Pasteur was not a very good student in elementary school and he preferred fishing and painting to studying. As he got older... he began to show an interest in scientific subjects, especially chemistry. Although he demonstrated a lot of talent as a painter, Pasteur's father encouraged him to study throughout high school and he was accepted to the best university in France, the École Normale in Paris.

Louis Jean Pasteur was born on December 27, 1822 in Dole in the Jura region of France and grew up in the town of Arbois. There he later had his house and laboratory, which is a Pasteur museum today. His father, Jean Pasteur, was a poorly educated tanner and a veteran of the Napoleonic wars. Louis's aptitude was recognized by his college headmaster, who recommended that the young man apply for the École Normale Supérieure, which accepted him. After serving briefly as professor of physics at Dijon Lycée in 1848, he became professor of chemistry at Strasbourg University, where he met and courted Marie Laurent, daughter of the university's rector in 1849. They were married on May 29, 1849 and together they had five children, only two of whom survived to adulthood.

In fact, many contemporaries can attest to this home grown talent. All this ... changed during his studies at the Ecole Normale Superieure in Paris. It was at this school that Pasteur was molded on the profession that he was destined to be in; thus started the long and arduous journey of scientific discovery.

He, along with Alexander Fleming, Edward Jenner, Robert Koch and Joseph Lister, is of great importance when studying medical history. Pasteur’s discovery – that of germs – may seem reasonably tame by the standards of 2002, but his discovery was to transform medicine and see his name forever immortalised on a day-to-day basis in pasteurised milk – named in his honour.
