Louis Pasteur: Discoveries
built 632 days ago
Louis Pasteur (1822-1895) was a giant among 19th century scientists. His career spanned the fields of chemistry, molecular biology, and immunology in a remarkable chain of discovery. A theoretician whose work had profoundly practical application, Pasteur possessed a rare combination of imaginative approach and intellectual rigor.
Louis Pasteur discovered the method for the attenuation of virulent microorganisms that is the basis of vaccination. He developed vaccines against chicken cholera, anthrax and swine erysipelas. After mastering his method of vaccination, he applied this concept to rabies. On July 6, 1885, Pasteur tested his pioneering rabies treatment on man for the first time: the young Joseph Meister was saved.

The name of Louis Pasteur became a household word for his two inventions: pasteurization process for sterilizing dairy foods and a vaccine for rabies. While these two inventions are hallmarks of his long, rich career but he achieved much more. In public mind the name of Pasteur is associated with rabies to such an extent – that his main discoveries are often forgotten.
The Senior Pasteur... did not see his son ending up as an Artist, and Louis, himself, was showing increasing interest in chemistry and other scientific subjects. The highest wish Father Pasteur had for his son was that he complete his education in the local schools and become a professor in the college at Arbois. However the headmaster of the college recognized that Louis could do much better and convinced father and son that Louis should try for the Ecole Normale Superieure in Paris. This most prestigious French University was founded specifically to train outstanding students for University careers in science and letters. And it was here that Pasteur entered and began his long journey of scientific discovery.
