The Murphy Brown star was, of course, married to Malle for the last fifteen years of his life. This interview, then, if far more personal than Billiard's. Bergen's focus is on Malle's restless, vital intellect. If the well-to-do Malle had a kindred spirit in that movement, it was the lower middle class Francois Truffaut. Both, unlike Godard and Chabrol, were creatures of the heart rather than the head. But where Truffaut's genius concentrated largely on the romantically slighted, Malle's great talent lay in getting audiences to accept his characters until their most absurd or offensive actions earned a seal of approval.

Louis Malle wurde 1932 in Thumeries (Département Nord, Frankreich) geboren. Er war das fünfte von sieben Geschwistern in einer reichen Industriellenfamilie. Er wurde streng katholisch erzogen. Mit 14 Jahren machte er die ersten Aufnahmen mit der 8-mm-Kamera seines Vaters. Malle beschloss, Regisseur zu werden, und verbrachte viel Zeit in Kinos.
