A common misconception about this legend is his date of birth; Louis Armstrong was born August 4th, 1901. For many years the public believed Armstrong to have been born on the Fourth Of July in 1900. The story, a fabrication created by crafty public relations men, made good print. Although he went along with the stunt, his influence in jazz, still being felt today, would be just as far reaching if he had laid claim to being born on "Groundhog Day."

By the middle 1920s, Louis Armstrong’s star was rapidly rising. He formed a band called the “Hot Five” and cut his first records for Okeh in 1925, including the famous rendition of “St. Louis Blues” with Bessie Smith. The Hot Five -- later the Hot Seven -- existed for three years, but never played a live date. Rather it was formed for recording purposes only. In the meantime, Armstrong continued playing in other bands.

Louis Armstrong has a complicated admissions process--the result of the stormy history that preceded its opening in 1979. A certain number of seats are reserved for children from District 30 and District 24, but children from all over Queens may apply. Bus transportation is provided for children from outside the neighborhood. Children are admitted according to a complex lottery designed to maintain the school's racial balance without upsetting the racial balance in neighboring schools. The lottery ... ensures that the school has a mix of children of different abilities. More nonwhites than whites apply, and that generally gives whites an edge in admissions.
Sample Liner Notes by Rob Bowman: In the spring of 1959, when Louis Armstrong took the stage in Belgium to play the concert captured on this DVD, he had much to smile about. The irrepressible trumpeter and singer had cut his first records with King Oliver’s Creole Jazz Band some thirty-six years earlier. In the interim, he had completely redefined the possibilities of both instrumental jazz and popular singing. His concept of what it meant to swing had become the very essence of jazz rhythm, and his ceaseless ability to create coherent melodic improvisations over a given set of chord changes had reconstructed the very nature of the jazz ensemble. Along the way, he significantly raised the bar with regard to instrumental virtuosity. As a vocalist, Armstrong was equally accomplished.
