To date, the Florida Lottery has raised US$14 billion for Florida education. However, there is some controversy over that. In 1988, Florida lawmakers in the 1989 State Budget voted to reduce the education budget proportionally to what the Lottery would bring in. Some believe this has resulted in many of the problems suffered by Florida schools today. Most believe this is a violation of a promise, and has made Floridians wary of all tax increases as a result.

Once the good cause was complete, the lottery ceased. While the state needed the lottery to finance these projects, it did not depend on lottery proceeds to fund daily services, By the twenty-first century many states, such as California, Illinois, Florida, and New Jersey, used lottery proceeds to fund education. In other states lottery proceeds have funded Medicare (Pennsylvania), police and fire departments in local communities (Massachusetts), and a host of other day-to-day operations of government.

TALLAHASSEE No ticket matched all six Florida Lotto numbers, producing an estimated $33 million jackpot for the next drawing, lottery officials said today. A total of 136 tickets matched five numbers to win $5,027; 7,780 tickets matched four numbers for $71; and 159,527 tickets matched three numbers for $4.50. The winning Florida Lotto numbers selected Saturday: 6-9-21-29-40-52.
