The Los Angeles Lakers has ... been the home to athletes who have made an indelible mark in the NBA. Among them is the legendary George Mikan, whose dominant play as a center inspired the game of other NBA athletes like Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, and Shaquille O’Neal. George Mikan’s game is so authoritative that new rules were introduced, such as the goaltending rule and the 24-second shot clock rule, to give the other teams in the league a fair chance. George Mikan also holds the record on the highest percentage of a team’s point in a single game in the NBA. George Mikan scored 15 of the Lakers’ 18 points, accounting for 83.3 percent of the team’s score, in the lowest scoring game ever in NBA history.

The Los Angeles Lakers remained a powerful team during the decade of the 1990s but failed to capture an NBA Finals Title. In 1996 the Lakers signed Shaquille O'Neil as a free agent and drafted a high school player, Kobe Bryant. The Lakers had the nucleus for the next dynasty. In 1999 the Lakers hired new coach Phil Jackson. Jackson led the Chicago Bulls to six NBA Finals titles during the 1990s and was the final piece to the Lakers new dynasty. With Jackson at the helm, the Los Angeles Lakers won three NBA titles in a row from 2000 - 2002.
