After a four-year postseason drought, Los Angeles qualified for the playoffs nine consecutive years from 1974 to 1982. Marcel Dionne became one of the NHL’s most dominating centers, amassing more than 100 points in 7 of his 11 full seasons with the Kings. In both 1979 and 1980 Dionne was awarded the Lester B. Pearson Trophy as the NHL’s outstanding player. Starring with Dionne during the 1970s and 1980s were center Bernie Nicholls, left wing Charlie Simmer, and goalie Rogie Vachon.

The Kings ... made an even bigger move in 1999, as they left the Great Western Forum and moved to Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles, which was built by Anschutz and Roski. Staples Center was a state-of-the-art arena, complete with luxury suites and all the modern amenities that fans and athletes would want in a brand-new facility.

Soccer preliminaries would be the only events beyond Los Angeles and Orange Counties. Rowing and canoe-kayak, held 90 miles away at Lake Casitas in 1984, would take place at Long Beach in 2016. Bren Center at the University of California-Irvine campus, to be used for badminton, is 40 miles from downtown L.A. and is the most far-flung non-soccer venue in the current plan.

LOS ANGELES — The 50th Annual Grammy Awards program is an extraordinary undertaking. One hundred fifty-five tons of lighting, sound and set pieces hang from the ceiling of Staples Center, moved up there by 340 chain motors. The operation requires 13,000 amps of power, and 280 technicians and stagehands move around the massive venue.
