Loretta Young

Having successfully gone from an ingénue to a leading lady, Young started receiving "star treatment" in 1931 that would continue for decades. She appeared as the subject of a story or cover photo nearly every month that year, although she gave few personal interviews. It is estimated she posed for more than 125,000 photographs during her career, but never in the gauzy drapes that made the model look undressed. Joan Wester Anderson pointed out in Forever Young that "the gossip columnists were usually benevolent where Loretta was concerned. She was easy to like because she genuinely enjoyed people, and she had a fragile, vulnerable quality that inspired protectiveness in others." Not that Young did not provide plenty to gossip about.

That's the way Miss Loretta is, you see. Blunt. No-nonsense. So while one half expects that Miss Young will greet guests by swinging open the doors of her desert residence, draped head-to-toe in evening clothes, the actual reality is considerably more sensible and down-to-earth. The day Palm Springs Life visited, for example, Miss Young was dressed in a simple roomy caftan, her own creation.

In the story, for such a loyal wife, Loretta seemed much more concerned with absolving herself from the blame of his death than missing her spouse. Still you get what you expect from these films, and they don't make any apologies. Film-noir classic fun!

Her latest book, Forever Young, is the only Authorized Biography of Loretta Young, who asked Joan to write her book because she knew from reading her angel books that she would write it well. Joan spent a considerable amount of time in Loretta's home, interviewing her for the book, and it was heartrending to Joan when she learned Loretta had died shortly before the book was published.

Unlike many of the live anthology dramas, big name guest stars were not a regular feature of The Loretta Young Show. The biggest stars appeared as guest hosts during Young's illness in the fall of 1955. Barbara Stanwyck, Joseph Cotten, Claudette Colbert, and several other film stars hosted the show in Young's absence. Marking the importance of her swirling entrances, none of the guest hosts came through the door to open the show. Over the years, guest actors included Hume Cronyn, Merle Oberon, Hugh O'Brian, and Teresa Wright.
