Loretta Young (January 6, 1913 - August 12, 2000) was an American actress. Born Gretchen Michaela Young in Salt Lake City, Utah, she moved with her family to Hollywood when she was three years old. Her sisters, Polly Ann Young and Elizabeth Jane Young (screen name Sally Blane) appeared in child parts in movies, and young Gretchen did the same. Her first role was at age 4 in the silent film The Primrose Ring. The movie's star, Mae Murray, so fell in love with little Gretchen that she asked to adopt her. Even though her mother said no, Gretchen was allowed to live with Murray for two years.

Loretta Young was one of the first Hollywood actresses to move successfully from movies to a television series. She made that transition in 1953 with Letter to Loretta (soon retitled The Loretta Young Show), an anthology drama series. Anthology dramas were a staple of 1950s programming, presenting different stories with different characters and casts each week. Young hosted and produced the series, and acted in over half the episodes as well. Capitalizing on her glamorous movie star image, her designer fashions became her television trademark. The show's success spurred other similar series, but Young's was the most successful.

One of the brightest stars of the Golden Age of Hollywood, the lovely Loretta Young appeared in over 100 films during her movie career. Some of her most memorable roles from the 30's and 40's were "A Man's Castle," "Ramona" and "The Farmer's Daughter," for which she won an Academy Award in 1947. In the 1950's, Loretta turned her talents to television. Her show first aired in September 1953, and in all, Loretta made over 280 episodes! This 3 DVD box set includes the first 30 episodes, starting with the original show "Letter from Loretta," re-titled "The Loretta Young Show." The weekly show made Loretta one of the best-known and beloved personalities on television. Her patented entrance, a dramatic swirl through her living room door, wearing the latest in fashion designer gowns, gained for her the reputation as America's best-dressed actress.
Loretta Young started her teaching career in 1988 as a middle school Language Arts teacher. She taught middle and high school Language Arts/English for seven years. As she became more interested in technology, Loretta moved into the Business Department in 1997 where she taught various business, design, and programming courses. In addition, Loretta served as sponsor for several student organizations.

Loretta Young Loretta Young was named Gretchen by her parents when she was born on January 6, 1913, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Her parents were Earl Young, a railroad auditor, and Gladys Royal Young. She joined sisters Polly Ann and Betty Jane (who became the actress Sally Blane); a brother Jack came along later. One day in 1916, Earl left for work and did not come back. Gladys packed up her children and moved to Hollywood, where she opened a boarding house to support her family.
