Like many actresses, Young fell in love with the leading men she played against. In 1929 she was opposite Grant Withers in Second Floor Mystery. The rising 25-year-old matinee idol was considered a catch, even though he was a drinker who had already been married and divorced. Two weeks past her seventeenth birthday, Young eloped with Withers aboard a charter airplane to Yuma, Arizona. Her mother, with whom she was close, disapproved of the marriage and stopped speaking to her. Nine months later, ironically while working together on the movie Too Young to Marry, Young was granted a civil divorce.

Loretta Young After leaving show business altogether in 1963 to devote her time to Catholic charities, Young returned to the small screen in several television movies in the late 1980s. Her last major role was in Lady in the Corner, a 1989 television drama. In her later years, Young was increasingly reclusive, though she made occasional public appearances in support of her favorite charities. She lived in Palm Springs, California, with her third husband (since 1994), the Oscar-winning costume designer Jean Louis, until his death in 1997. Young died of ovarian cancer on August 12, 2000.

Jean and Loretta have become big fans of the desert, relishing the privacy and nonchalance Palm Springs reserves for its famous residents. And famous indeed is Miss Young. Her listing in The Film Encyclopedia runs on for 73 lines and across two pages. Most bios recount her life ...: She was born Gretchen Michaela Young on January 6, 1913 in Salt Lake City and after her parents separated, moved with her family to Hollywood.

In 1934, Young had an affair with Clark Gable, and became pregnant. She and her mother moved to Europe, returning with a daughter. They told the whole world that the little girl had been adopted. The daughter herself, known as Judy Lewis (she took Young's second husband's last name), did not know the true story until she herself was an adult.
