Young was dating Jimmy Stewart when she met her second husband. The head of the radio department of the Young & Rubicam advertising agency, Thomas H. A. Lewis had recently put together the Screen Guild Theatre radio show. The show's performers donated their salaries to the Motion Picture Relief Fund to build a hospital and retirement home. He asked Young to accept a part. Lewis initiated their first "date" when he took Young to Sunday mass so she would make the rehearsal he had called. They married July 31, 1940, and honeymooned in Mexico.

For many it's hard to think of Young as an early star, and yet she began in silent films. By her own count, she played 98 leads over the course of some 60 years onscreen, and more than half of those leads came to her before age 25. Her early films remained unseen until fairly recently, but their availability, on video and cable, has borne out film historian David Shipman's contention that Young was at her best in her apprentice years.
