No one had ever successfully defended either the long jump or 100-meter title in the Olympics. Lewis won both in 1988. Competing in the long jump final just 55 minutes after he qualified in the preliminaries of the 200, Lewis finished first with a leap of 28-7¼.

The long jump has been part of modern Olympic competition since the inception of the Games in 1896. In 1914, Dr. Harry Eaton Stewart recommended the “running broad jump” as a standardized track and field event for women.[3] However, it was not until 1928 that women were allowed to compete in the event at the Olympic level (See Athletics - track and field).

The winner of the long jump was Jamesha Youngblood, who jumped over 20 feet on the three marks she had measured. Her winning distance covered 20-8 ½ (6.31). Runner-up at 19-10 ¼ (6.05) was Danielle Watson.
