Long Jump: Techniques
built 778 days ago
Speed, Accuracy and Consistency -- The single most important factor in long and triple jump performance is the execution of a fast, accurate, and controlled approach run. These events ... require consistent execution of an identical run-up over repeated attempts. Accuracy and consistency are the foundation upon which jumping skills and technique are constructed.

The flight phase of the long jump is the component of the event where there is the greatest measure of variability. Flight technique assumes three primary forms. These are the stride, the hang and the hitch kick techniques. Regardless of the technique used, there are certain principles that should be remembered. Good balance while traveling through the flight phase is essential. The ability to counter the forward rotation which is initiated at take-off is the best indicator of the effectiveness of the flight form.

In biomechanical terms, the long and triple jumps are rapid accelerations followed by a vertical impulse in order to achieve the greatest possible distance in flight. The triple jump is actually three separate jumps in the form of a hop, a step and a jump. Each phase is controlled by technique to maximize the sum of the three jumps.
