This phase is one of the most technical parts of the long jump. Jumpers must be conscious to place the foot flat on the ground, because jumping off either the heels or the toes will have negative effects on the jump. Taking off from the board heel-first will cause a breaking effect, which will decrease velocity and put strain on the joints. Jumping off the toes will decrease stabilization, putting the leg at risk of buckling or collapsing from underneath the jumper. While concentrating on foot placement, the athlete must ... work to maintain proper body position, keeping the torso upright and moving the hips forward and up to achieve the maximum distance from board contact to foot release.
Try running at different speeds and doing a long jump. Do you jump further when you run slow or fast? Put a marker on the grass - you can use a piece of wood or a shoe. Always start your jump at the maker and get someone to help you mark where you land each time. Then do the same for them. Experiment with swinging your arms and legs in front of you as you jump too.

Never forget that the long jumper is a speed event. The training goals should be to develop speed and to develop skills of jumping that can be executed at high speed. The training for the horizontal events is explosive and very taxing. Be sure to give the athlete's reasonable recovery between jumping days so that they can perform with reasonably fresh legs.
