The Hitchkick -- The HITCHKICK style is the most complex technique of long jumping. It counteracts forward rotation by creating secondary axes of rotation that work in opposition to the forward rotation. The cycling motion of the arms and legs keep the body upright and balanced throughout the jump. The 1 1/2 stride hitchkick is better suited to high school athletes. Upon take-off, the legs continue cycling forward as in sprinting. The arms cycle overhead in balance with the legs.

Some form of the long jump was featured in the ancient Olympics after it was introduced in 708 BC as part of the pentathlon. But as vase paintings such as the one shown in the top photograph attest, there was an intriguing difference between the way ancient athletes performed their jumps and the way modern ones do: Ancient Olympians took off holding halteres, or jumping weights. The weights, made of stone or lead, improved the jumpers' performance.

A common tool in many long jump workouts is the use of video taping. This allows the athlete to go back and review their own progress as well as enabling the athlete to compare their own footage to that of world-class athletes.
