London — containing the City of London — is the capital of the United Kingdom and of England and is recognised as one of the key "world cities". With over seven million inhabitants (Londoners) in Greater London, it is the second-most populous conurbation in Europe, after Moscow. Founded as Londinium, the capital of the Roman province of Britannia, it later rose to become the centre of the British Empire. Today it generates over 17% of the GDP of the UK's economy, the world's fourth largest, and is a major financial centre along with New York and Tokyo. For several centuries, London has been one of the most influential powers in politics, finance, arts and fashion and remains so today.

London's oldest surviving Indian restaurant, established in 1927, changed hands last year and this new incarnation is dazzling. The room itself is bright, colorful and stylish; it could be mistaken for a Modern European restaurat; but the food is unmistakably Indian, presented in a lively modern way. It offers real Indian food prepared by experienced chefs from India, reflecting Veeaswamy's roots-authentic dishes from southern India, and from the north Indian courts. Freshly ground spices are used to give well rounded, complex flavors and the hotter dishes are clearly marked with warnings. Here you can discover dishes virtually unknown outside Indian homes-Fresh Mussels in an Aromatic Coconut and Ginger Sauce; Karwari Red Fish Curry of Fresh Kingfish with Poppy Seeds and Red Chilies; and Aubergine in a Tamarind and Peanut Sauce. The wine list has been carefully chosen to complement the spices and the food.

The Borough of Lewisham in London has launched a new program to help clean up the neighborhood with the help of the public and MMS. Everyone is allowed to download an Java application to their cell phones and then proceed to take pictures of graffiti, abandoned cars, garbage, etc. The application then uploads the photo a council who will go to the pictured spot and clean up the mess. The standard MMS fees apply for the public, but just think of how pretty the environment could be without all that nasty tagging. more

Sundays in London are best approached in the traditional manner. First, get up late and buy the Sunday newspaper of your choice (the more supplements the better); second, retire somewhere comfortable and order a bloody Mary; third, tuck into a good old proper Sunday roast: beef, Yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes, veg and gravy. Since most Londoners don't have the time, energy or oven space to cook a roast themselves, most pubs and restaurants offer Sunday lunch of one kind or another. But choosing a good one is a veritable minefield. Slow or rude service is unacceptable when you're feeling a bit ropey and delicate. Soggy potatoes, suspiciously instant-tasting gravy, annoying watercress flourishes as decoration, and attempts to modernize can all be compounded by a bad hangover.
