Liver cancer is the fifth most common cancer worldwide. Approximately 500,000 cases of liver cancer are diagnosed each year and it is the third cause of cancer-related deaths. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the most common form of liver cancer, occurs more often in males than females and is most common in people over 50 years of age. The reported prognosis for advanced liver cancer is poor with most patients dying within a year regardless of the treatment they receive. Liver cancer represents a significant unmet medical need.

When the Liver is Overloaded. Your liver is a workhorse that can even regenerate its own damaged cells. However, it is not invincible. When it lacks essential nutrients or when it is overwhelmed by toxins, it no longer performs as it should. Hormone imbalances may develop. Fat may accumulate in the liver and then just under the skin or in other organs.

Liver function tests, or LFTs, include tests for bilirubin, a breakdown product of hemoglobin, and ammonia, a protein byproduct that is normally converted into urea by the liver before being excreted by the kidneys. LFTs ... commonly include tests to measure levels of several enzymes, which are special proteins that help the body break down and use (metabolize) other substances. Enzymes that are often measured in LFTs include gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT); alanine aminotransferase (ALT or SGPT); aspartate aminotransferase (AST or SGOT); and alkaline phosphatase (ALP). LFTs also may include prothrombin time (PT), a measure of how long it takes for the blood to clot.

Liver allografts for transplant usually come from non-living donors who have died from fatal brain injury. Living donor liver transplantation is a technique in which a portion of a living person's liver is removed and used to replace the entire liver of the recipient. This was first performed in 1989 for pediatric liver transplantation. Only 20% of an adult's liver (Couinaud segments 2 and 3) is needed to serve as a liver allograft for an infant or small child.

Inflammation of the Liver (hepatitis) may ... be caused by an attack of micro-organisms which have reached it through the veins coming from the large intestine, or through the main arteries. There are, of course, as the result, pain and tenderness, and there is often jaundice. The case should be treated by rest in bed, fomentations, calomel and saline aperients. But when the hepatitis is of septic origin, suppuration is likely to occur, the result being an hepatic abscess.

Liver may be eaten by old people or crazy people. When cooked, it smells like diarrhea, one of the few things old people can taste. Insane people like to eat it because they're unable to tell the difference between the smell of diarrhea and something that people actually like to eat. After eating diarrhea the insane person may start screaming AAAAAAAAA! when they realize that they have in fact eaten diarrhea.
