Liver cancer is the sixth-most common cancer, killing about 600,000 people annually. More than half of those deaths are in China, where Onyx is performing additional trials. The drug is ... is undergoing further tests in Japan.

The American Liver Foundation recognizes that parents of children with biliary atresia need help in coping with the immense strain of this chronic illness. To meet this need, the American Liver Foundation is continually organizing and coordinating mutual help groups through its 25 chapters around the country, to provide emotional support for families, making referrals to specialists where appropriate, and keeping people aware of the latest research developments.

A person with liver failure usually has jaundice, ascites, hepatic encephalopathy, and generally failing health. Other common symptoms include fatigue, weakness, nausea, and loss of appetite. In acute liver failure, a person may go from being healthy to near death within a few days. In chronic liver failure, the deterioration in health may be very gradual until a dramatic event, such as bleeding varices (large, tortuous veins), occurs. The person may tend to bruise and bleed easily. Bleeding that would be slight in other people (for example, bleeding from a small cut or a nosebleed) may not stop on its own and may even be difficult for doctors to control.

GGT is found predominantly in the liver. AP is mainly found in the bones and the liver but can ... be found in many other organs, such as the intestines, kidneys, and placenta. Therefore, elevated levels of AP will indicate that something is wrong with the liver only if the amount of GGT is raised as well. Keep in mind that, GGT can be elevated without AP being elevated, as GGT is a sensitive marker of alcohol ingestion and certain hepatotoxic (liver toxic) drugs. It should be noted that for unclear reasons, people who smoke cigarettes appear to have higher AP and GGT than nonsmokers. Also, levels of AP and GGT are most accurate after a twelve-hour fast.

Many disorders may affect the liver or biliary system, including bile duct disorders, cirrhosis of the liver, gallstones and hepatitis. Many people have their gallbladders removed and still have biliary function. The liver can withstand great damage over time and even regenerate its tissue. However, extreme damage that kills liver cells eventually affects the organ̢۪s ability to function properly, resulting in liver failure. Liver failure can require organ transplantation. If an organ is not available, liver failure can cause death.

With a living donor transplant, a healthy person donates part of his or her liver to the recipient. This procedure has been increasingly successful and shows promise as a solution to the shortage of liver donors. It is becoming the most frequent option in children, partly because child-sized livers are in such short supply. Other methods of transplantation are used for people who have potentially reversible liver damage or as temporary measures for those who are awaiting liver transplants. These other methods are not discussed in detail in this article.
