Liver: Liver Cells
built 632 days ago
This is a image showing the cells that make up the liver called Hepatocytes, indicated by the red arrows. These cells can be either single nucleated or bi-nucleated as seen in this image. In between these cells is located the Hepatic Sinusoids, (blue arrow), which is where the blood percolates through and eventually drain to the central vein.

Your liver is very resilient in the face of liver problems. It can remain functional after losing most of its cells to disease. It can regenerate in a few weeks — even after much of it has been removed during surgery.

Simply put, the liver is the filtration plant, chemical factory, and storage depot for the body. As blood enters the liver through branches of the portal vein and hepatic artery, it passes through the lobule walls and flows between the rows of liver cells, depositing blood into channels called sinusoids (See diagram on p. 18). Here special scavenger cells trap and devour worn-out red blood cells, bacteria, and other debris.

[One] important function of the liver is performed by so-called ‘phagocytic’ Kupffer cells, which line the vascular networks. These cells play an important role in the prevention of systemic infection and inflammation, by extracting and destroying particulate matter, such as pro-inflammatory bacterial cell walls, as it passes through the liver via the bloodstream.
