Liver: Diseases
built 619 days ago
Several breeds of dogs are prone to a genetic disease caused by accumulation of copper in the liver. Breeds most often affected include the Bedlington, West Highland, Kerry Blue and Skye Terriers, Doberman Pinscher, Cocker Spaniel, Labrador Retriever, German Shepherd Dog, Miniature Schnauzer, Bulldog and Pekingese. Although the disease is not believed to be commonplace in Dalmatians, several cases have been reported. Copper is found in all foods then absorbed by the intestines, stored in the liver and excreted through the bile system. Affected dogs genetically have the inability to eliminate copper from the liver.

Primary liver cancer is rarely discovered early and often doesn't respond to current treatments — ... the prognosis is often poor. Even when treatments fail to provide much improvement in the liver cancer itself, pain and other signs and symptoms caused by liver cancer can be aggressively treated to improve quality of life. But the most important news about primary liver cancer is that you can greatly reduce your risk by protecting yourself from hepatitis infection and cirrhosis, the leading causes of the disease.

San Francisco's API residents comprise 34% of the city's population and bear a disproportionate burden of liver cancer and undetected HBV infection. Hepatitis B is a serious disease responsible for 80% of all liver cancers among APIs. San Francisco has the highest liver cancer rate in the nation. It is estimated that 1 in 10 people in the API community have an undiagnosed infection. APIs are up to 100 times more likely to suffer from chronic HBV infection and 4 times more likely to die from liver cancer compared with the general population.

Although AFP screening can detect small tumors in some people, most liver cancer isn't diagnosed early. That's because symptoms usually don't appear until late in the disease and because liver cancers grow quickly. The most common type of liver cancer, HCC, doubles in size every four months. Diagnosis is ... difficult because the effects of some liver tumors may resemble those of other medical conditions, and because liver cancer can't be diagnosed using a standard panel of liver tests.

This disease, seen more often in cats than in other animals, occurs when excess fat (called triglycerides) accumulates in liver cells (hepatocytes) and bile accumulates in hepatocytes (cholestasis). It is technically called Idiopathic Hepatic Lipidosis (IHL). The idiopathic part means that the specific cause is unknown. This form of lipidosis causes liver failure, and can lead to death if left untreated.
