Liver: Cancers

Tumours of the Liver may be innocent or malignant. The most important of the former is the [G]umm y of tertiary syphilis; this may steadily and completely disappear under the influence of iodide of potassium. The commonest form of malignant tumour is the result of the growth of cancerous elements which have been brought to the liver by the veins coming up from a primary focus of the large intestine. Active surgical treatment of such a tumour is out of the question. Fortunately it is, as a rule, painless.

While there are other types of liver cancer, the most common form in adults is called hepatocellular carcinoma (huh-pat-uh-CELL-u-lar car-sin-o-muh). It begins in the hepatocytes, the main type of liver cell. About 3 out of 4 primary liver cancers are this type. Most of the information in this article refers to hepatocellular cancer.

Various cancer-causing substances are associated with primary liver cancer, including certain herbicides and such chemicals as vinyl chloride and arsenic. Smoking, especially if you abuse alcohol as well... increases risk. Aflatoxins, cancer-causing substances made by a type of plant mold, have also been implicated. Aflatoxins can contaminate wheat, peanuts, rice, corn and soybeans. These are rare problems in most developed countries like the US.

Hepatitis C causes chronic inflammation of the liver that can go undetected for months or years but is frequently progressive, resulting in life-threatening impairment of liver function. Persistent liver inflammation causes ongoing injury to the cells of the liver. It can lead to liver scarring called cirrhosis, liver failure, possibly liver cancer and death due to the complications of these hepatic insults. Liver complications of chronic HCV infections are the most frequent indication for liver transplants.
The greatest health disparity between Asian Americans and white Americans is liver cancer, 80% of which is caused by chronic hepatitis B infection. Approximately 10% of all Asian and Pacific Islander (API) Americans have chronic hepatitis B infection compared with 0.1% of white Americans. Liver cancer rates are 9 times higher in Vietnamese Americans, 4 times higher in Korean Americans, and 4 times higher in Chinese Americans than white Americans.
