Little Rock High School was the original home of Little Rock Junior College, which began in 1927 with approximately 100 students. In 1931 it moved to the former U.M. Rose Elementary building at 13th and State streets (on the present-day Philander Smith College campus), then it moved again during the 1948-49 school year to an 80-acre tract of land on Hayes Street (now University Avenue). The school district divested itself of the junior college in 1957 to a private board of trustees. Little Rock Junior College expanded its curriculum and changed its name to Little Rock University the same year, becoming a four-year institution. It merged with the University of Arkansas system in 1969 and became the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.

Little Rock boasts numerous cultural, historic, and recreational sites for visitors and residents to enjoy. The William J. Clinton Presidential Center, opened in 2004, houses the Clinton presidential library and the offices of the Clinton Foundation and the Clinton School of Public Service. The MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History, which opened in 2001, is one of the oldest buildings in central Arkansas and was the birthplace of General Douglas MacArthur, supreme commander of U.S. forces in the South Pacific during World War II. The Little Rock Zoo, one of Arkansas' great treasures, has grown enormously from its origins in 1926. The facility began with just two animals and today boasts more than 725 animals representing over 200 species. Other notable attractions in the city include the following:
Boys The Little Rock Boys & Girls Club began in 1912 as the Citizenship Club formed by a group of Little Rock newspaper carriers. In 1917, with 700 members, they became the Little Rock Boys club. The first permanent facility was constructed in 1931. Membership was opened to girls in 1971. Membership has grown to 4,200 boys and girls ages 6 to 18 in five units. The units are located in predominantly low-income residential areas in southeast, central, southwest and near-west Little Rock.
Little Rock is named for a specific little rock and this is it. Most of it, anyway. This rock used to be much more prominent. A big chunk was dynamited away during the construction of this railroad bridge, one end of which is built right on top of the rock. History and progress collided and for once there was a compromise. Progress only destroyed part of the historical landmark. Still, at the turn of the century when the railroad bridge was built here, historical preservation was not the priority it is now.
