By the end of the year, Lita was in the middle of a feud between both the Hardy Boys, who weren’t getting along. Matt and Jeff’s rivalry led to a match at the December pay-per-view, Vengeance with Lita being the special referee. Jeff won the match, but Lita didn’t notice that when she was counting, Matt’s leg touched the rope. This led to a Handicap match with Jeff and Lita versus Matt the night after on RAW. Lita performed the Litacanrana on Matt, but eventually he used her pants in a roll up for the victory.

Lita competed in the Women's division throughout early 2004, winning a battle royal to become the number one contender for the Women's Championship on the April 5, 2004 episode of RAW. Victoria defeated Lita to retain the Women's Championship at Backlash on April 18. The next night on RAW, Lita was reunited with Matt Hardy when Hardy attacked Kane in an attempt to prevent him from harming Lita, beginning a new angle involving the trio.[40] In the following weeks, Kane began repeatedly assaulting Hardy and attempting to seduce Lita. During the course of the angle, he kidnapped Lita and held her tied up backstage where he supposedly asked her a 'question',[40] and he persuaded Eric Bischoff to give her a title shot at Bad Blood on June 13. The next night on RAW, Lita revealed that she was kayfabe pregnant.[1][40] One week later, it appeared that Hardy was going to propose to Lita, but he was interrupted by Kane, who claimed to be the father of Lita's child, as Lita had slept with Kane to persuade him to stop attacking Hardy.[2] Two months later, it was revealed that Kane was, in fact, the father. Hardy and Kane feuded for several months, culminating in a "Till Death Do Us Part" match on August 15 at SummerSlam, with the stipulation that Lita would be obliged to marry Kane should Hardy lose.[2][41] Kane won the match, leading to he and a reluctant Lita marrying one another on the August 23, 2004 episode of RAW.[2] Despite being kayfabe married to Kane, Lita harried him during his matches, constantly aiding his opponents.

Following a brief feud between Team Xtreme and The Two-Man Power Trip (Triple H & Steve Austin) in April 2001, Lita began pursuing the WWF Women's Championship once again. She challenged Women's Champion Chyna at Judgment Day on May 20 but was defeated in what was Chyna's last WWF match. In the same month, Eddie Guerrero began teaming with the Hardy Boyz. An angle involving Guerrero and Lita began to develop,[20] but it was cut short in June 2001 when Guerrero was sent to drug rehabilitation, and Chyna, who was ... supposed to be involved in the storyline, was also released from the WWF.
