While Jennifer Aniston was getting friendly with Brad Pitt and Courteney Cox was cozying up to David Arquette, Lisa Kudrow had other concerns. The only married cast member of "Friends," Kudrow, 35, had been trying to get pregnant--and had finally succeeded. But when the producers wanted to write her pregnancy into the script, she had mixed feelings. "God forbid something had gone wrong with the pregnancy," she says. "I wouldn't want to play a pregnant person, still having a baby." The show went fine.

Lisa Kudrow first made her name playing Phoebe, the ditzy, New Age member of the titular close-knit pals on NBC's highly successful sitcom Friends. Since then, she has bridged the gap between television and film with undeniable success, winning particular acclaim for her role as an uptight school teacher in Don Roos' The Opposite of Sex (1998). Born in Encino, California on July 30, 1963, Kudrow earned a degree in biology from Vassar College before beginning her acting career. After college, she joined the Los Angeles improvisational group, The Groundlings, at the urging of family friend Jon Lovitz. Improv paved the way for more work, and Kudrow was soon appearing in bit roles in a number of films. Her first real break didn't come until 1993, when she began appearing on the TV sitcom Mad About You as Ursula, the waitress from hell.

While Lisa Kudrow has made her name portraying slightly ditsy, even flaky characters on the small screen, she has ... proven to be a strong actress in features. While capable of projecting the quintessential "Valley girl" persona (in fact she was raised in the San Fernando Valley), this intelligent woman holds a degree in biology from Vassar. Although she had initially harbored dreams of a medical career (following in her father's wake), Kudrow turned to show business partly at the urging of her brother's friend Jon Lovitz. Lovitz encouraged her to audition for the famed L.A. improv group The Groundlings and while she did not make the cut on her first try, Kudrow was impressive enough to be referred to acting teacher Christine Szigeti. Eventually, the then-brunette actress was accepted as a member of the troupe where she honed her impeccable deadpan delivery and comic timing.
