Lions are the only cats that are social rather than solitary. They usually live in groups called prides, which vary in composition but may occasionally include as many as 30 individuals. The lionesses do a considerable part of the hunting. There is no definite breeding season. They inhabit grasslands, scrubland, and semidesert areas, where they hunt antelope, zebra, and other large herbivorous animals, as well as domestic stock. Lions ... eat carrion.

Lions don't usually fight until dinnertime, when everyone is fighting for their share. It can get very violent, and many lions receive deep gashes and teeth marks in their hide from other lions. The males want to eat first, then the highest ranking (older) females, then the lower ranking females, and the cubs eat last. An adult lion can eat as much as 40 lb of meat in a single sitting. They gorge themselves, and may not eat for a couple days after a large feast.

Lions tend to dominate smaller felines such as cheetahs and leopards in areas where they are sympatric. They will steal their kills and will kill their cubs and even adults when given the chance. In the case of the cheetah, it has a 50% chance of losing its kill to lions and other predators.[96] Lions are major killers of cheetah cubs. 90% of cheetah cubs die in their early weeks of life by lions and other predators. Cheetahs avoid competition by hunting at different times of the day. Cheetah cubs are hidden in thick brush.
