[L]ike all pets, lions need exercise and entertainment to mantain their mental and physical health. "Exercise wheels" allow lionss to run full speed, if they manage to squeeze themselves into the three inches of room provided by the wheel. Another common object is the "Lion ball," a gigantic plastic ball in which a lion can be places so he can safely explore outside of his cage. Just keep him away from breakable objects, or easily flattened children. Also, lions, like many rodents, are gnawers and must be supplied with appropriate materials for doing so; for example, an edible gnaw toy, an unpainted wooden block, or an elderly woman. Failure to do so can cause dental problems for the lion, as the incisors, which grow continually, will become too long and cause discomfort and/or eating problems.

When people think of lions, the image of royalty immediately comes to mind. In most cultures the lion has been used to symbolize both rulers and the strength of the nation. Kings are depicted either with or as lions in many cultures. Lions are ... kept as pets in this respect. It was recorded that the Egyptian pharaohs Ramasses II and Tutankhamun kept lions as pets, perhaps used as an image of strength to foreigners.

Movies and folktales seem to portray lions and hyenas as mortal enemies in constant competition. But just how accurate is this portrayal? From what zoologists can tell, it's a very realistic description. One outstanding example is the observations of a lion described in the book 'Hunting With the Moon'. This lion was called Ntchwaidumela by researchers, a name which means "He who greets with fire".
